Write a product review. To some degree I wasn’t entirely wrong in thinking that but Jaishree Misra has steered away from domestic violence, instead focusing on the just as toxic domestic indifference If the book shelves of Indian libraries were organised by theme, it’s fair to say that the section for ‘books about unhappy arranged marriages’ would need many kilometers of shelving.
Young and vulnerable, Janu gave up Arjun, her first love, to enter into an jaishgee marriage. N stop ribbing Davie - he was just bneing nice to me! Back in Kerala, things suddenly turn out promisws her favour, she gets the divorce, Riya is returned to her, and she is ready to start a new life with Arjun.
However they realize that their life will be incomplete without Riya. Janu’s recounting of her arrival at her marital home on the day of her marriage, on her 18th birthday, is brilliant. The book has a lukewarm opening about a young girl in love being forced to marry against her wishes. Have’nt heard ’bout this book but one thing is sure. I respect Jaishree Misra for not giving into that temptation.
There is a hole in her soul which only her daughter can fill. She leaves England to return to India and fight for custody of her daughter. Talk to your friends about it, definitely not for the light hearted ones.
One person found this helpful. Her sole hope for happiness gets punched when, she delivers a mentally challenged baby girl, Riya. It also has a lazy ending where the above mentioned young girl, who by then has become a mother of an autistic?
Janu is forced to leave for England without her daughter. Beautiful style of narration Thinking of penning my next review on it Thumbs promlses for - the beautiful picture of Delhi JM has painted so pomises so that I cant wait to get there manner in which JM has effortlessly manipulated me to feel for Janu and read on even though every single turn in the plot was very much predictable for ending the story on a positive note and offering hope Thumbs down for - the characterization as I thought it was a little too one-dimensional.
So you can imagine my trepidation when my friend recommended me another novel by an Indian woman not being sexist here which dealt with life in Kerala. But she must return to Kerala to get her Riya back, because she believes that a life of happiness built on the pain and sufferings of other people cannot last.

She, like anyone else, is searching for her happiness in a society sold on show with no place for the soul.
The setting seems scarily familiar. Yet Janu is devoid midra any rancor, blaming her situation on some Karmic inevitability, some “ancient promises”.

No trivia or quizzes yet. It’s often said by outsiders and of course I’m one of them that Indian families handle disability in a positive and nurturing way, so much better than western society.
Ancient Promises
An inspiring piece of fiction Jul 10, Cynthia George rated it really liked it. One of the best Indian writer I have ptomises across. Jun 30, Renunair rated it really liked it. I personally felt AR had gone overboard attempting to give too much of a literary bent to what was a very routine common place fictional attempt. The Western lifestyle for freedom gets rooted in her mind during her school days.
This is definitely worth reading. Sensitive Indians, especially Keralites. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? The other one that I wanted to check out was ”Aruna’s Story”, heavily recco’d by Rekh. I felt nostalgic when I read about my homeland, Kerala. I especially loved those anecdotes on how each of jaihree moments or people we meet are connected to our past life.
Straight from the heart!! The story is too real to our life and Janu is human, approachable and her problems are real and vivid that is so hard to solve.
