I was quite startled by the ending, and felt it a little abrupt, but how could I be disappointed after such a magical book! Son of a Witch: I think this may be my favorite Gregory Maguire novel. Deconstructing a fairy tale and retelling it from the point of view of a traditionally unsympathetic character looses its novelty quickly.

The ending was satisfactory and you’ll slowly learn to love Iris and even Ruth with all their flaws. Iris held my heart, and Claramy pity. Something that could’ve been exciting is just blah.

The prince shows up and they live happily ever after and the step-family get their just desserts.
